Kevin Taylor talks insurance rankings with Postonline.co.uk

This week Kevin Taylor was featured on POSTOnline.co.uk discussing research Gravytrain conducted into Google rankings in the insurance industry. This is the first of our quarterly features discussing movements in insurance rankings and looking at who is dominating and who is falling off the pace.

Kevin stresses the importance of investing a lot of time in optimising your website and social media presence in order to be near the top of the first page. Improvements need to be an ongoing process, in order to reap the most benefits. Because the worrying fact is that most websites which do not make it onto the first page risk being considered irrelevant. This notion is then backed up by research from Chitika.

He then talks about the research Gravytrain conducted between 1/11/2011 and 1/02/2012, determining who were the winners and losers of the insurance sector, vying for a top rank on the first page. Money Supermarket was the big winner, topping search results in car, home and travel insurance searches. Meanwhile, Go Compare and Compare the Market, 2 aggregators that invest heavily in marketing and advertising, struggled to hold onto high positions, sitting in sixth and eighth place.

Following on from this research, Kevin concludes by mentioning the things required to drive success in search rankings, which includes staying alert to clues Google gives whenever they announce improvements to their search process.

Overseas Property Infographic

We wanted to let you all know about a new infographic we have done for one of our clients, Insure My Villa.

The infographic looks at the behaviour of expats moving away from the UK and the most popular overseas destinations to move to. What it shows is that us Brits love moving to places such as Australia, France and even the UAE, but that the place we are happiest abroad is in Spain.

It also shows that although a lot of people love to move abroad, there are some things we Brits miss a lot! Top of the list is the countryside, our sense of humour and good old fashioned pubs!

So what do you think? Would you like to move abroad? And if so what do you think you would miss the most?

If you are interested in having an infographic made for your company, please contact our Business Development Executive, Alex Moran, on 020 8941 2364.

Kevin Taylor Featured In the Guardian

This week, Kevin Taylor was featured in the Guardian careers online article, ‘How to write a CV for marketing’.
The article provides tips and advice for graduates looking to pursue a career in marketing.

It begins by explaining there are specific skills that must be demonstrated such as a high degree of numeracy, organisational skills and the need to be articulate and empathetic with customers.

For digital marketing roles specifically, there is a requirement for individuals to understand the technologies available to communicate with clients and colleagues. Kevin’s input during a Q&A session on Careers in Digital Marketing is then shared. He said Gravytrain tends to hire, “people who have immersed themselves in digital marketing in their spare time”. He then urges digital marketing job seekers to get involved in blogs, showing off their own ideas and opinions – particularly on new technologies.

Following on from this are useful examples of what a good CV should include.

London to Paris for Sport Relief 2012

Every year we love to get involved with Comic Relief; it’s just one of the many charity events we participate in here at Gravytrain, and this year was no different! After our 24 hour race at Le Mans via the Playstation last year, we thought we needed to do something a little bit more physical for this year’s Sport Relief event.

So, the Gravytrain team threw down the gauntlet for Sport Relief last week with a gruelling 12 hour Bike ride to the Eiffel Tower in the centre of Paris. Well, at least that was the plan! We seemingly underestimated our own fitness levels as we managed to cover the full 342 kilometres in just eight hours and forty minutes. Not only were we surprised by our stamina and fitness, but we were also delighted to have comprehensively beaten our own target whilst raising some significant money for Sport Relief in the process.

Clad in our best sporting attire we took the reins of the spin bike one by one to complete 20-30 minute stints in order to cover the full distance from our office in Hampton Hill to the Eiffel Tower. The bike ride was supposed to be in no way competitive between us, as it was a team effort purely for charity, however, it soon turned into a mini competition to see who could cover the longest distance before having to take a break. That achievement went to one of our Web Developers, the fiery haired Craig who left us all in his wake as he covered 24.5km in just 30 minutes.

Of course, with every competition, there is always someone bringing up the rear and in this case, unfortunately, it was one of our Social Media Exec’s, Nick, who covered the shortest distance as he only managed a distance of 11.9km in 20 minutes, and then nearly passed out…nonetheless every little helps. Thanks Nick!

Furthermore, we also worked out that Alex, our Business Development Executive, who covered 16km in 25 minutes, would lap Nick a total of 13 times if they were to cycle the Indianapolis 500. This was just one of our many findings.

The spin bike used was lent to us by motive8, a health and fitness consultancy group based just a stone’s throw from Gravytrain HQ, and they now plan to beat our time to the Eiffel Tower, something we expect they’ll do since they are trained athletes! Thanks for all your help guys and good luck trying to beat our time.

So far we’ve raised £745.00 for our efforts, however there is still time to donate. Simply visit our Sport Relief sponsor page in order to give what you can to help change lives in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. It’s a great cause that we love getting involved in and one that we all feel proud to have taken part in.

Well done team!

Kevin Taylor Involved In Digital Insurance Strategies Debate

During Post’s annual forum on Digital Strategies in Insurance, a few industry experts discussed the possibility of having policy sales made through social media sites and Smartphone apps. One Underwriting director then championed the argument that an all encompassing app could be made which would be compatible with all major insurers. However an e-commerce director from LV Insurance wasn’t too convinced that this would be plausible, despite the success of their own LV app.

A lot of time goes into developing and maintaining a Smartphone app. It was then confirmed that “The challenge is trying to get people to download it in the first place, and then you’ve got to get the feedback and do the updates as well, so it’s pretty intense”.

While this topic brought mixed opinions, the issue of policy sales through social media sites garnered the response that it was a long way from being a reality. Kevin then commented that the industry is “miles away from selling insurance via social media”.
