Google to target on line shoppers with text message marketing: Opt-in trial to launch ahead of Black Friday

Google users will soon be given the option of receiving promotional offers from the search engine for retailers via text message. Google will start marketing the new feature to mobile users this month.

Users will need to subscribe through an advertisement promoted on and by Google, after they have searched a query related to a type of deal or offer. Once subscribed, the user will then receive promotional offers for and during the type they selected. Take for instance if someone searches for “black friday deals”, clicks on a Google ad and then signs up, they will start getting SMS messages for deals around Black Friday.

For the time being, Google are trialling the new ad format during three events; Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the Holidays.

The brands participating in the test are yet to be announced but it will be interesting to see initial results.
